We're Off to Grand Rapids

Some of our members
will be traveling to Grand Rapids this weekend
because one of our members
is celebrating something very special indeed:
The Perpetual Profession of Vows
with the Dominican Sisters of Grand Rapids.

Anna is one of our sopranos.
Actually,
I am always amazed at how effortlessly
Anna reaches some of this high notes!

Anyway,
Cántico de la Mujer Latina
has been invited to form
a part of the music ministry
for this very special event in Anna’s life.

We will be leaving for Grand Rapids
early on Saturday morning.
We’ll rehearse in the afternoon.
And the mass is set for 4:00p.m.
In the Dominican Chapel at Marywood.

We learned some new music for this event.
Included in the mass for that day
will be the as yet unpublished
"Misa de la Familia de Dios"
by Vincent Párez.
This mass setting was written in the memory
of Liturgical Composer, Lalo Silva.

So we are not only pleased
to be able to join Anna for this event,
we are happy to be one of the first
to use this mass setting!

We are all so proud of Anna!
Please keep her in your prayers.

Doña Consuelo

Scroll Down for English

A veces,

Nican Mopohua,
El canto nuevo que estamos ensayando,
Ya esta tomando forma.
Nuestros miembros nuevos (Rosa, Irma, Gabriela)
“Nican mopohua, motecpana in quenin yancuincan
Hueytlamahuizoltica, monexiti in
cenquizca ixpochtli Sancta María Dios Inantzin
tocihuapillatocatzin, in oncan Tepeyacac, motenehua Guadalupe.

Marcy,
Nuestro guitarrista y compositora,
Siempre nos dice
Que todo lo que pasa,
Pasa por una razón.

Cuando llegamos a la casa de Janie,
Doña Consuelo, su mama,
Nos pidió un canto a la Virgen,
“Desde el cielo una hermosa mañana. . . .”
Los cantos importantes
Siempre están cometidos a memoria,
No importa que largas son.
¿Interesante, no?

Last night Cántico had another great rehearsal.
Though, it was not without a little bit of confusion.
We arrived at St. Gabriel to rehearse,
only to find out that the parking lot had been black topped
and we couldn’t enter the grounds.

I knew they were working on the parking lot
as I had been there that morning
for mass with the Vacation Bible School children.
When I asked
I was told that we would be able to enter the grounds,
but would need to park elsewhere.

But you know,
it was no problem at all.
Sometimes,
we really need to just look at these little inconveniences
as the opportunities that they really are.

We decided to rehearse at Janie’s house
as she lives in the area
and was gracious enough to have us over.
Janie is one of the original members of Cántico

Nican Mopohua,
the new song we’ve been working on,
is really taking shape.
Our new members (Rosa, Irma, Gabriela)
are all fitting in the with the group rather nicely.
Yes, we’ve all managed to conquer the Náhuatl,
"Nican mopohua, motecpana in quenin yancuincan
Hueytlamahuizoltica, monexiti in
cenquizca ixpochtli Sancta María Dios Inantzin
tocihuapillatocatzin, in oncan Tepeyacac, motenehua Guadalupe.

We handed out a rehearsal schedule
for the rest of the summer and most of the fall
as well as a tentative program for our
part in the concert at St. Gabriel Parish in September.

Marcy,
our group’s guitarist and composer,
always says that everything that happens
happens for a reason.

As we started arriving at Janie’s,
Doña Consuelo, Janies’s mother, asked us to sing
her favorite song to La Virgen.
How could we not oblige?
“Desde el cielo una hermosa mañana. . . .”
Isn’t funny how the songs that are important
are committed to memory
no matter how many verses there are?

Perhaps the reason we rehearsed at Janie’s house
had nothing at all to do with a new parking lot.
It was so that we could serenade an elderly woman
who continues to inspire us all
with her life of faith.
But you know,
it wasn’t about us singing for Doña Consuelo,
It was so that by spending a little time with her
she could continue to inspire us.

Cántico de la Mujer Latina.
You know, the song isn’t always about the music.

Cantico de la Mujer Latina is very happy that we have found a new rehearsal venue at St. Gabriel Parish in Detroit. St. Gabe's has many talented folk, including many of her young parishioners. In fact, they even have a Mexican Folkoric Ballet.

God Bless the U.S.A.

Cantico de la Mujer Latina
wishes everyone a very happy
and safe 4th of July.

May God continue to bless us all.
We ask special blessings on those
who are unemployed
or experiencing financial hardship
during this country's tough economic times.

May God bless all who are in need
of any type of healing:
physical, emotional, spiritual.

May God bless all of our military,
especially those who are stationed abroad.

And in our own prayers,
may we remember those
who still strive for the freedoms
that the United States of America gives to us.

God bless the U.S.A.!

Cantico welcomes another new member

The ladies of Cantico de la Mujer Latina
were very pleased last night.
Sister Nina arrived bringing a friend, Gabriela.
By the end of the night,
she committed to our group!
Although she didn't bring her instrument last night,
I hear tell Gabriela is a guitarist.
Next rehearsal we hope to work with her,
getting necessary music in her hands!

I'm not so sure what is going on lately,
but it's all good.
We have welcomed one new member
at every rehearsal
for the past three rehearsals!

A few weeks ago we welcomed Rosa.
Rosa is actually an alto,
but is actually quite capable of singing soprano.
So, at least for now, she is enhancing our soprano section.
She is also quite handy with the maracas
and other hand held percussion instruments.

And then, we welcomed Rosa's sister, Irma.
I've known Irma for years.
In fact,
Irma sang with me in a choir I directed
in a pervious life!
Irma is very decidely an alto.
If there is no alto part for a particular piece,
Irma has the creativity and the ear to create one!

I also learned last night
that one of our ladies who has stepped aside for awhile,
Rosalinda, will be coming back to us
for special readings and poetry.
Rosalinda is one of the best lectors I have ever heard.
And when she does a special reading
or recites poetry,
well, let me just say that she commands your attention.
When she recites
you just have the greatest desire to listen,
to absorb every word.
Thanks, Rosalinda!
You don't know how much we've missed you!

I'm not sure what's happening.
But I am certain that it is all of the Holy Spirit.
Our new members
coupled with our new rehearsal venue. . .
. . .well. . . .It's all good!

About Cantico de la Mujer Latina

Cántico de la Mujer Latina
is a wonderful and talented group of women.
Our ministry is not only creative and artistic.
It is thought provoking.

Many of our songs speak to the reality
of those living on the margins,
those often forgotten by society.
We use our creative ministry to challenge.

All of our members
have a special devotion to and love for our Blessed Mother.
Our music moves beyond traditional marian songs and hymns
with Santa Maria de América Latina, Nican Mopohua,
and Canto a Mi Mamita, which was written Marcy,
one of our members.

We use oral readings in some of presentations.
This includes the poetry of Gloria Anzaldua
as well as some of the great works of Ana Castillo.
We've also used some of the writings
of Cuban American Theologian, Dr. Ada Maria Isasi-Diaz.

Our voice is musical.
Our voice is poetic and, dare I say, prophetic.
We've often collaborated with others
and have used dance as a creative element in our ministry.
We have also made creative use of LCD projectors with our music,
using images that speak more
than any word sung or spoken.

Our ministry includes original works of music
written by Marcy, our guitarist.
Our ministry also includes original poetry
written by Rubi, the group's director.

We are available to server for prayer services,
special masses, and retreats.
We are also available for concerts.
Our songs and our readings
are in both Spanish and English,
though primarily in Spanish.
Most of our music and oral reading is written by Latin women,
including some original works by some of our members.

We do not belong to any one parish,
but hail from several different parishes.
Nor are we a nonprofit 501c3.
We are, very simply, a group of women
who have decidely made it our mission
to evangelize via creative means.

We do hope you enjoy your visit here at our blog.
We are El Cántico de la Mujer Latina.

Rosa Martha Zarate

As the founder and director
of Cantico de la Mujer Latina,
I must honestly say that one of the composers
who has most inspired me
is Rosa Martha Zarate.

She is the composer of "Cantico de Mujer,"
which has sort of become our theme song.
We sing several other of her works:
Por Nada Me Devuelvo, Antorcha de la Fe,
Profetiza.

Playing around on Google this morning
I found her website.
I'm not sure when this site went online,
but I'm going to assume it was recently
as I'm online a lot and surely would have found it before.

Anyhow,
here's a link to her site.
RosaMartha.com

Without a doubt,
Rosa Martha Zarate is the inspiration
behind our creative ministry
that challenges.

Gracias, Rosa Martha.
Cantico de la Mujer Latina
appreciates you and your minstry
more than you may ever know!

Gracias, Padre Jaime

Cantico de la Mujer Latina had another great rehearsal last night.
I’m pleased to say that we welcomed yet another new member!
This puts our membership from the following parishes:
- Ste. Anne; Detroit, MI
- St. Elizabeth; Wyandotte, MI
- Our Lady of the Woods; Woodhaven. MI
- St. Francis Xavier; Ecorse, MI
- St. Alfred, Taylor; MI

But. . . as of yesterday,
it would seem we need to add more parish to the list:
-St. Gabriel, Detroit.

Well. . .OK. . .
. . . we don’t have any women in the group
from St. Gabriel. .. . yet.
But I’m certain that will come in time.
In any event,
we truly need to add St. Gabriel
to the list of parishes that support us.

You see,
Cantico was looking for a rehearsal venue in the city.
And so I asked Padre Jaime,
Pastor of St. Gabriel,
if it would be possible for Cantico de la Mujer Latina
to have a little bit of space.
Padre Jaime was kind and gracious
and welcomed us to St. Gabriel!

In fact, he joined us
for a part of our rehearsal last night with his Ukelele.
He prayed with us and blessed us.

Cantico de la Mujer Latina
has two events scheduled for September.
More on that when details become available.
One of those events will be held at St. Gabriel Parish in Detroit.

For now, we just want to say Gracias, Padre Jaime.
Thank you for welcoming us to St. Gabriel.
But even more, thank you for your commitment
to making music a primary tool of Evangelization.

.. ..so...when are we going to write a Cumbia mass setting,
complete with sung presider’s part???... :)

Nican Mopohua

The Cantico Ladies are in rare form and are ready.
We outlined a summer rehearsal schedule
and even welcomed a new member last night.

We are currently working on a new, as-yet-unpublished,
mass setting.

We are also working on a wonderful song
that we found, of all places,
on Youtube!
I've often said that we need to evangelize by use of internet.

Here's a slideshow video
that features a song we are currently learning.
The song is called "Nican Mopohua,"
and is performed in this slideshow video by a group called "Exaudi."

I bet you can't wait to hear it prayerfully perfomed
by El Cantico de la Mujer Latina!

This songs goes back and forth between two langauges:
Spanish and Nahautl.
Nahautl is the indigenous language of St. Juan Diego.

The words, "Nican Mopohua."
are the first words of the document relating the story
of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
The document was originally written in Nahuatl.
