Cántico de la Mujer Latina - Upcoming Events in October - Hispanic Heritage Month

Cántico de la Mujer Latina (Canticle of the Latin Woman), a creative ministry, will serve as guest music ministry for two Downriver parishes in the Archdiocese of Detroit during Hispanic Heritage month.

On Oct. 14, Cántico will join the Charismatic Music Ministry of Wyandotte’s St. Elizabeth parish for the church’s 10:30a.m mass. Mass will be in English with some songs led by Cántico in Spanish. Included in the mass for that day will be music from Misa Salvadorena, songs for worship based on the homilies of Bishop and Martyr, Oscar Romero. St. Elizabeth is located at 138 Goodell Street in Wyandotte, Michigan.

Cántico will also serve as ministers of music for St. Alfred Parish in Taylor, that same day (Oct. 14) for the parish’s 2:00p.m. Spanish mass. This mass will include the Misa Salvadorena as well as Misa del Pueblo Inmigrante (Mass of the Immigrants). St. Alfred is located at 9500 Banner in Taylor, Michigan.

Where Have We Taken Our Creative Ministry?

Where have we taken our Creative Ministry?

Cántico de la Mujer Latina has taken our creative ministry to many throughout the Archdiocese of Detroit. We accepted an invitation to U of D/Mercy. We shared our music with the Downriver Unit of Church Women United. We have served as ministers of music for various events held at St. John center in Plymouth, MI.

We have also taken our creative ministry to variety of places in the U.S. We were invited to North Park University in Chicago. We gave a creative presentation in Albuquerque at the invitation of The Southwest Liturgical Conference.

Perhaps one of our most exciting invitations came from Mexico City. We were invited to sing mass at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe on the Feast of the Assumption in 2002. After being interviewed by Dr. Elaine Carey, Cántico de la Mujer Latina earned a place in Latinas in the United States: A Historical Encyclopedia (Indiana University Press.)

Welcome!

Hello and Welcome to the blog that celebrates Cántico de la Mujer Latina!

Cantico de la Mujer Latina is a creative ministry that actually began several years ago.

We began very simply, humbly. At the time, I was a member of the Standing Committee for Hispanic Pastoral Musicians with the National Association of Pastoral Musicians (NPM). I received a phone call from Fr. Virgil Funk, founder and at the time, president of NPM. The regional convention was coming to Grand Rapids, MI, and he asked if I could present something "hispanic." No other parameters were given.

I thought about it for a few days and submitted my proposal to Fr. Virgil & NPM: An afternoon of praise featuring music, poetry, theology written and performed by Latina women.

And so Cántico de la Mujer Latina was born.

Our events often feature original music and original poetry by some of our members.

Keep your eye on this blog for updates and information about Cántico de la Mujer Latina! We'll be posting photos, repertoire, member profiles and so much more!
