Cántico de la Mujer Latina sings for mass at St. Alfred Parish in Taylor, MI

Cántico de la Mujer Latina recently served as guest choir for St. Alfred parish in Taylor, MI. We served at the parish’s 2:00p.m Spanish mass.

This celebration included selections from Misa Salvadorena, songs for worship based on the homilies of Archbishop and Martyr, Oscar Romero, written by Guillermo Cuéllar.

Other songs in this mass included "Canten al Senor," written by Donna Pena. We also used some of the music of one of our favorite liturgical composers, Rosa Martha Zarate. We used Rosa’s "Antorcha de la Fe," whose text and poetic recitative celebrate the Mexican experience. Of course, we also sang Rosa’s "Cántico de Mujer," which has become our theme song!

Cántico de la Mujer Latina learned a new "Padre Nuestro" just for this occasion, as the Spanish speaking community of St. Alfred uses the "Padre Nuestro" written by Cuban-American Liturgist and composer, Fr. Juan Sosa. Fr. Juan is currently the president of The National Institute of Hispanic Liturgy.

The post-lude inlcuded "Le Lo Le Lo Lai Lo," which is actually a Puerto Rican acclamation for the mass.

Many thanks to Fr. Jim Kean, pastor of St. Alfred, for having us.

Thanks also to Janet Díaz for her support. Thanks Janet, for helping us set up, finding the extra stand, for all you do for St. Alfred parish.

Many thanks, also, to Joseph Zarazua for helping us to set-up.

We were very well received by the community and actually received an invitation from one of the parishioners to sing at a special event later on this month!

Where is Cántico de la Mujer Latina taking our creative ministry next?
We are currently considering a few trips out of state. We are awaiting formal invitations from sponsor groups as well as checking into schedules and financing. We do not know which, if any, of these invitations we will be able to accept, but we are most grateful to even be considered. Keep an eye on this blog for further updates and information.

We are always open to bringing our creative ministry to your area. You may feel free to contact us for information about inviting us to your parish or special event. You may also subscribe to this blog. Please note that if you contact us for more information or subscribe to this blog you will be asked to confirm the request via email. Thank you, again, to St. Alfred, for having us.

San Alfredo, ruega por nosotros.

Cántico de la Mujer Latina sings at St. Elizabeth Parish in Wyandotte, MI

The mass at St. Elizabeth parish in Wyandotte was a wonderful experience. The above photos show how both the music team of the parish and Cántico de la Mujer Latina worked well together. The joyful noise created by the combined music team was something to be remembered!

Cántico de la Mujer Latina led in the singing of Misa Salvadoreña, songs for worship based on the homilies of Archbishop and Martyr, Oscar Romero. These songs were written by Guillermo Cuéllar.

The St. Elizabeth Music Ministry & Choir lead in singing Marty Haugen’s Mass of Creation.

Anna Santiago (Cántico soprano) and Amber Toporek (St. Elizabeth soporano) were in high form as they gracefully and effortlessly added beauty to Dan Schutte’s “Sing a New Song,” to Christopher Walker’s “Celtic Alleluia,” and indeed to the entire celebration.

Not be outdone, Mary Lipko (St. Elizabeth alto), Janie Tabares-Beaton and Linda Salas (Cántico altos) made sure that the Ladies of the Lower notes made the entire group harmonious! And Larry Rickman was the terrific tenor that helped to make the total sound tremendous!

St. Elizabeth drummer, Mike Bomba, made joyful sound abound! Cántico’s hand-held percussion instruments were striking as well, special thanks to Dolores Galvan.

Guitarists weren’t lacking on Sunday either! Jim Alexander and Neal Weick headed up the St. Elizabeth ensemble as usual, with Marcy Salas adding her graceful guitar on Cántico’s behalf.

Fr. Charles Morris not only presided, but his singing of the Eucharistic Prayer served to enliven and enhance the prayers at the altar.

Many thanks to Jim Alexander for all of the time and effort taken to set up extra mics and miles and miles of cable. Thanks, Jim, for hunting down those extra music stands, for setting up and striking, for everything you do!

Many thanks to Fr. Charles Morris and to the members of St. Elizabeth Worship Commission for being open to the idea of having Cántico de la Mujer Latina as a guest choir.

We were asked at what parish Cántico sings for each weekend. The answer is quite simple: We go wherever there is an invitation! We do not belong to any one parish. While it is true that Cántico de la Mujer Latina was born at Historic Ste. Anne in Detroit, we are currently an inter-parrochial group.

Oscar Romero Quotes

As you may have read in our previous post, Cántico de la Mujer Latina will be serving as music ministers in two Downriver parishes in the Archdiocese of Detroit during Hispanic Heritage month. Some of the music we will be using is taken from the collection, "Misa Salvadorena." This music is based on the homilies of martyred Archbishop, Oscar Romero.

I came across an interesting blog entry and thought you might appreciate it. Visit the link below to see some interesting quotes made by the man who was assassinated at the table of the Eucharist, including his final words before he died.

Quotes by Archbishop Oscar Romero.

Another interesting place online, from Claretian Publications, you may like to visit tells the story of Oscar Romero very well. Click Here to visit that site.

And, just a reminder that Cántico de la Mujer Latina will serve at the following two parishes on Oct. 14, 2007:

St. Elizabeth, Wyandotte, MI - 10:30a.m. mass
Mass will be in English with some songs led by Cántico in Spanish. Included in the mass for that day will be music from Misa Salvadorena, songs for worship based on the homilies of Bishop and Martyr, Oscar Romero. St. Elizabeth is located at 138 Goodell Street in Wyandotte, Michigan.

St. Alfred, Taylor, MI - 2:00p.m.
This mass will be in Spanish and will include the Misa Salvadorena as well as Misa del Pueblo Inmigrante (Mass of the Immigrants). St. Alfred is located at 9500 Banner in Taylor, Michigan.
